The Unimatic UT5-TANC-B: A Masterclass in Collaborative, Utilitarian Design

In the often-crowded world of microbrand watches, few have carved out a design language as distinct and respected as Unimatic. Founded in Milan in 2015 by industrial designers Giovanni Moro and Simone Nunziato, the brand has become synonymous with a minimalist, function-forward aesthetic that strips watches down to their essential forms. Their limited-edition releases are eagerly anticipated, fostering a dedicated community of collectors. The latest release, the Modello Cinque UT5-TANC-B, is a compelling evolution of their vision, born from a powerhouse collaboration with British heritage designer Nigel Cabourn and esteemed menswear retailer, The Armoury.

A Legacy of "Less is More"

Before diving into the specifics of this new release, it's crucial to understand the Unimatic philosophy. Moro and Nunziato met while studying at the Politecnico di Milano, sharing a passion for vintage timepieces and contemporary design. This duality is at the core of Unimatic's identity. Their approach is often described as "design by removal" or even "brutalist," focusing on clean lines, robust construction, and high legibility. Each piece is designed and cased in Italy, individually numbered, and produced in a limited run; once a reference is sold out, it is never reproduced. This commitment to exclusivity and quality has propelled them from a side project to a significant player in modern horology.
"We think of the product as a tool; we then take the elements and put them together in a way that is not decorative," founder Giovanni Moro has said, encapsulating the brand's ethos.

The TANC Collaboration: A Trifecta of Taste

The UT5-TANC-B isn't Unimatic's first foray into collaboration, nor is it their first with Nigel Cabourn. A 2019 project with the iconic British designer, the U2-NC, was a rapid sell-out, inspired by the 1955 Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition. This new Modello Cinque revisits that spirit of extreme exploration, bringing The Armoury, founded by Mark Cho and Alan See, into the fold. The collaboration is a natural fit, merging Cabourn's deep appreciation for vintage military aesthetics with The Armoury's refined sartorial sensibility and Unimatic's stark, industrial design. The result is a duo of watches that feel like modern, elevated field instruments.

Breaking Down the Modello Cinque UT5-TANC-B

Blue watch caseback with detailed engravings:

The UT5-TANC-B is a spec-heavy tool watch that departs from Unimatic's typical dial design while remaining true to its core principles. Built on the 36mm Modello Cinque platform, it's a highly wearable, robust timepiece designed for adventure.

Key Specifications:

  • Case: 36mm 316L stainless steel with a unique Cerakote™ navy blue stonewashed coating. This durable ceramic finish is pre-patinated, giving the watch a rugged, lived-in character from day one. The case measures 43.7mm lug-to-lug, ensuring a comfortable fit on a wide range of wrists.
  • Durability: This is a true tool watch. It boasts a formidable 300 meters of water resistance, aided by an 8mm screw-down crown. It also meets MIL-STD-810H military standards for toughness, thanks to Unimatic's proprietary 360° anti-shock movement holder.
  • Dial: Here lies the biggest departure for the Modello Cinque line. Instead of the usual baton indices, the UT5-TANC-B features printed Arabic numerals, a clear nod to classic military field watches. The navy blue dial is highly legible, with Super-LumiNova® GL Old Radium lume for low-light visibility. A key design touch is the Nigel Cabourn logo rendered in international orange, a color echoed on the tip of the reverse lollipop seconds hand.
  • Movement: Powering the watch is the reliable Seiko VH31A meca-quartz caliber. This choice is both practical and enthusiast-focused, offering the grab-and-go accuracy of quartz (±15 seconds per month) with a sweeping seconds hand that mimics the smooth motion of a mechanical movement.
  • Crystal & Strap: A 2.2mm thick double-domed sapphire crystal with an inner anti-reflective coating protects the dial. The watch is paired with a forest green nylon two-piece quick-release strap, featuring hardware that matches the case's stonewashed navy Cerakote finish.

Current Relevance & Exclusivity

The Unimatic x Nigel Cabourn x The Armoury Modello Cinque UT5-TANC-B is a limited edition of just 150 individually numbered pieces. This scarcity, combined with the strength of the collaboration and the departure in design, makes it an instant collectible. It represents a successful fusion of different design worlds: the rugged utility of military gear, the refined taste of modern menswear, and the stark minimalism of Italian industrial design.

For the watch enthusiast who values robust build quality, a clear design heritage, and the exclusivity of a small-batch production, the UT5-TANC-B is a compelling proposition. It’s more than just a timepiece; it's a wearable piece of design, born from a shared passion for objects that are built to last and look good doing it.

I originally started VELOCE to put my skills to work, hone my app design and web development practices, and dive deeper into the world of horology. I wanted to learn more about the watches, the brands, and the incredible people behind them - the creators, the designers, and the collectors. I love discovering new timepieces and sharing their stories with the world. VELOCE is my ultimate passion project and hobby, the creative space I head to after my full-time job to build something I truly care about.
