Design Story: Andries Stilte as a Standard Bearer
The shirt features a portrait of Andries Stilte as a Standard Bearer by Johannes Cornelisz Verspronck. Painted around 1640, it depicts a fashionably clad member of the Haarlem civic guard, exuding the confidence of the Dutch "golden age." Stilte, identified by his family coat of arms and the blue standard and sash of the Kloveniers militia company, is shown in a sumptuous pink satin costume and plumed hat.
This portrait captures Stilte's personal taste, wealth, and status as a bachelor, as Haarlem's militia regulations stipulated that only unmarried men could serve as ensigns. Verspronck, a prominent Haarlem portraitist, created this piece just before Stilte resigned his rank to marry.
