July 4th, 1776. It’s a date that means something. Breitling is betting it means enough for a pair of tough, patriotic, and seriously limited edition Avenger pilot's watches. They've just dropped the America250 collection to mark the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.
The collection consists of two models. We get a robust time-and-date automatic in steel and a high-tech chronograph in ceramic and titanium. Both are drenched in red, white, and blue, but they couldn't be more different under the hood.
These aren't just slapping a flag on a dial. The symbolism runs deep, especially with the piece counts. Let's get into what makes these two tick, and whether the tribute lands.
Before we break down the new models, let's remember what the Avenger is all about. This isn't a delicate dress watch. Breitling CEO Georges Kern says it was created for the "punishing conditions of a jet cockpit."
That means big, legible, and tough as nails. The design language is pure modern military aviation. You get chunky bezels you can operate with gloves on, screw-down crowns, and serious water resistance.
The Avenger is Breitling's modern bruiser, a direct descendant of its tool-watch legacy. It stands apart from the vintage charm of the Navitimer or the polished look of the Chronomat. It's built for function, first and foremost.

First up is the time-and-date model, reference A173281B1C1X1. Limited to 250 pieces, this is the more accessible and straightforward of the pair. It’s a classic Avenger formula with a patriotic twist.
The case is 42mm stainless steel, with a thickness of 12.15mm. It’s substantial but not over-the-top, hitting a sweet spot for a modern tool watch. It has a deeply saturated blue dial and comes on a matching blue calfskin strap with sharp red stitching.

Flip the watch over, and you get a solid steel caseback. This is where the tribute gets specific. There's a deep engraving of the Liberty Bell, a powerful symbol of American independence.
It also features the inscription: "Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof." This is topped off with the official America250 logo and the "ONE OF 250" limited edition text. It’s a thoughtful detail you’ll see every time you take it off.
Powering this Avenger is the Breitling Caliber 17. Let’s be clear about what this is. It's a reliable, COSC-certified chronometer movement based on a proven ebauche, likely a Sellita SW200-1.

It beats at a standard 28,800 v.p.h. and offers a power reserve of around 38 hours. Honestly, that power reserve is on the shorter side by today's standards. You can't set it down for a whole weekend and expect it to be running Monday morning.
But the upside is that it's a workhorse. It's incredibly robust and any competent watchmaker can service it easily. For a tool watch meant to be worn, there's an argument to be made for this kind of reliability over a more temperamental in-house caliber.
The 300-meter water resistance on this watch is no joke. Combined with the screw-locked crown and unidirectional bezel, it's a fully capable dive watch, even if its heart is in the sky.
At $5,100, you're paying a premium for the Breitling name and the limited-edition nature of the piece. The movement itself is solid, but it isn't the main draw. You buy this watch for the tough Avenger design and the specific American tribute.

Now we get to the main event: reference SB01464A1C1X1. This is where things get really interesting from a watch nerd perspective. It's limited to just 50 pieces—one for each state in the union.

This is the "Night Mission" version, which in Breitling-speak means advanced materials. The 42mm case is made from scratch-resistant black ceramic. It's stealthy, lightweight, and incredibly hard.
But they didn't stop there. To ensure strength where it matters most, the caseback, crown, pushers, and buckle are all crafted from solid titanium. This combination provides a fantastic strength-to-weight ratio and a cool, tactical look.
Here's the part that justifies the $9,700 price tag. Through an open caseback, you can see Breitling's flagship Manufacture Caliber 01. This is their in-house, high-performance chronograph movement, and it’s a serious piece of engineering.
It provides a weekend-proof 70-hour power reserve. More importantly, it features a column-wheel mechanism with a vertical clutch. For the uninitiated, this is the gold standard for modern chronographs.
A vertical clutch means the chronograph seconds hand starts instantly and smoothly, with no "jump" when you press the pusher. The column wheel provides a crisp, satisfying feel to the pushers. It's a tangible upgrade you can feel every time you use the complication.
The caseback view is special. The B01 movement is surrounded by a titanium ring engraved with 50 stars and the inscription "ONE OF 50," making the state-by-state tribute crystal clear.
The dial is a striking blue with contrasting white sub-dials for the 30-minute and 12-hour counters. The chronograph seconds hand is tipped in red, completing the patriotic theme. It's busy, as all chronographs are, but it remains highly legible thanks to the strong contrast and bold markers.
Despite the complexity and the exhibition back, this watch still maintains a massive 300 meters of water resistance. Getting that level of protection on a chronograph with pushers is a real technical achievement. It proves this watch has the toughness to back up its aggressive looks.

The B01 Chronograph is the true collector's piece here, a fantastic showcase of Breitling's technical prowess with a clever patriotic angle. The Automatic is a much tougher sell; it feels like a steep price for a tribute piece with a standard movement. Both are aimed squarely at the die-hard Breitling fan with a deep love for Americana.
Breitling has created a potent, if niche, duo with the America250 collection. These aren't watches for everyone. They are bold, thematic, and unapologetically American in their inspiration.
The execution is top-notch, especially on the Chronograph. The mix of ceramic and titanium, powered by the excellent B01 movement, makes for a truly compelling modern sports watch. The symbolism of 50 pieces for 50 states is a masterstroke for a limited edition.
The Automatic is a solid watch that offers a more accessible way to join the celebration. While the movement may not excite hardcore enthusiasts, the overall package is pure Avenger. For collectors who bleed red, white, and blue, Breitling has just served up two very tempting options.
