CAPTA’s Uniscale: The Chronograph That Hides in Plain Sight
By Nick·October 2, 2026· 6 min read
CAPTA's new Uniscale chronograph boasts a revolutionary design, laser-engraving its multi-functional scales onto the sapphire crystal. This Swiss-made monopusher on Kickstarter rethinks complication display.
Every so often, a watch comes along that makes you stop and rethink a familiar complication. The new UNISCALE from French brand CAPTA is one of those watches. It’s a mechanical chronograph, but at first glance, you’d be forgiven for missing the point entirely.
That’s because its most complex feature is deliberately hidden. Instead of a busy dial crowded with scales, CAPTA laser-engraved its tachymeter, telemeter, and pulsometer onto the underside of the sapphire crystal. It’s a tool watch that masquerades as a clean, minimalist design piece.
The project is currently live on Kickstarter, offering a Swiss-made, manual-wind chronograph with a completely fresh take on displaying information. It’s an ambitious debut that hinges on one very clever idea.
Let’s be honest, most multi-scale chronographs are a mess. They cram three or more concentric rings of tiny numbers onto the dial, creating a functional but often illegible wall of text. CAPTA’s solution is both simple and elegant: combine all three scales into a single, unified track.
Hiding Complexity in the Crystal
Here’s the brilliant part. That unified scale isn’t printed on the dial itself. It’s meticulously laser-engraved on the inner surface of the double-domed sapphire crystal.
In most lighting, the watch presents a clean, almost sparse dial with a single 30-minute counter. But when the light hits it just right, the engraved markings for the tachymeter, telemeter, and pulsometer come to life. It’s a subtle effect that transforms the watch from a dressy chronograph to a serious instrument.
This laser-engraving technique is the core of the watch. It allows the Uniscale to be a functional tool watch without sacrificing a clean, minimalist aesthetic—a problem that has plagued multi-scale chronographs for decades.

This approach of rethinking the display recalls high-end concepts like the Singer Reimagined Track 1 Emirates Edition, which also re-architected the chronograph readout. Where Singer uses a radical central-counter movement, CAPTA achieves its unique look through clever optical design and a modified base caliber.
Under the Hood: A Modified Sellita Chronograph
Powering the Uniscale is a Swiss-made Sellita SW562. This isn't an off-the-shelf movement. It's a hand-wound chronograph caliber ticking away at a modern 28,800 vph (4 Hz).
The manual winding provides that direct, tactile connection collectors love. CAPTA went a step further by modifying the movement, removing the running small seconds subdial entirely. This decision declutters the dial, leaving only the central chronograph hand and a single 30-minute counter at six o'clock for a beautifully balanced, minimalist layout.
With a 63-hour power reserve, you can wind it Friday morning and it will still be running on Monday. CAPTA is also targeting an impressive accuracy of ±5 seconds per day, a testament to the quality of the base caliber and its regulation.
A Case of Clever Dimensions
At first glance, the 41mm diameter might sound a bit large for a watch with vintage cues. But the designers were smart about it. The measurement is taken diagonally across its unique case shape, and CAPTA claims it wears much more like a traditional 39mm watch.
Built for the Wrist
The key numbers confirm this. The lug-to-lug distance is a very reasonable 46mm, which is the most important metric for how a watch fits. Even more telling is the 42mm "drop-to-drop" measurement, which dictates how the bracelet will conform to your wrist.
At just 12.1mm thick, it’s remarkably slim for a mechanical chronograph, especially one with a massive box-domed crystal. The case also features a "destro" configuration, with the crown and pushers positioned on the left side. CAPTA frames this as an ergonomic choice for intuitive operation with your right thumb.
The 316L stainless steel case has been surface-hardened to 1,200 HV. That’s extremely scratch-resistant, giving you peace of mind during daily wear. Finishing is a mix of brushed and polished surfaces, with elegant twisted lugs and a distinctive colored lacquer-filled groove around the case midsection that matches the dial.
Dials Inspired by French Landscapes
The Uniscale comes in five distinct colorways, each inspired by the landscapes of CAPTA's native France. The options provide a nice range of personalities, from vibrant to muted.
The choices include:
Mediterranean Blue: A rich blue with a sunburst center.
Forest Green: A deep green, also with a sunburst finish.
Blooming Parma: A unique lavender tone with a sunburst effect.
Ghost Grey: A neutral gray with a contrasting sandblasted texture.
Tanned Sand: A warm beige with the same sandblasted finish.
All models use Super-LumiNova BGW9 on the hands and indices. This lume appears crisp white in daylight and glows a cool blue in the dark. The "tribal paddle-inspired" hands are a nice stylistic touch, giving the watch a unique identity without being distracting.
Pricing and Availability
This is a Kickstarter project, which means early backers get a significant discount. The campaign is "all-or-nothing," with a funding goal of $225,553, and runs until October 31, 2026.
Early backer pricing starts from €1,550 (approximately $1,675 USD). The planned full retail price after the campaign is expected to be around €2,950 (about $3,185 USD). This places it in a competitive spot for a Swiss-made manual chronograph with such a unique design concept.
You have the choice of a custom genuine leather strap that tapers from 20mm to 16mm or an optional seven-link "compressed rice beads" steel bracelet. Both options come with quick-release spring bars for easy swapping.
Editor's Take
The CAPTA Uniscale is one of the most interesting microbrand chronographs I've seen in a long time. It solves a real design problem with an innovative, elegant solution. If you appreciate clever design and want a tool watch that doesn't scream "tool watch," this is a fantastic proposition, especially at the early-bird price.
A Newcomer with a Clear Vision
The Uniscale is a perfect example of what makes the independent watch scene so exciting. It’s not trying to be a direct homage or a budget alternative to a Swiss giant. It’s a watch with its own point of view.
By hiding the chronograph scales, CAPTA has created a watch that can live two lives. It's a sophisticated, clean-dialed watch for daily wear, and a functional multi-scale instrument when you need it. For a brand's debut piece, that's a remarkably clear and confident statement.
