Seiko and the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) have one of the most natural partnerships in the watch world. For a decade, they've collaborated on dive watches that are as serious about performance as they are about celebrating the ocean. To mark PADI’s 60th anniversary, Seiko is releasing the Prospex HBB002, a limited-edition "Turtle" that packs a visual punch for a compelling price.

A Partnership Rooted in the Deep

Seiko PADI automatic diver's watch. Blue textured dial, blue bezel, steel case/bracelet, red seconds hand, day/date.
Seiko’s dive watch history is legendary, starting with the 62MAS in 1965. The brand has consistently produced robust, reliable, and innovative divers that have become trusted tools for professionals and enthusiasts alike. They are, for many, the default choice for a serious underwater watch. PADI, founded in 1966, holds a similar position in the diving community. It is the world's largest scuba diver training organization, setting the standard for safety and education. PADI has certified over 30 million divers, essentially creating the modern recreational diving landscape. When these two names come together, it means something. This partnership, now celebrating its tenth year, feels authentic because both brands are leaders in their respective fields. This shared heritage gives their collaborative watches a credibility that money can’t buy.

The Seiko HBB002 Dial: A World of Detail

The dial is the main event here. Seiko took the PADI 60th anniversary logo and used its globe motif to create a subtle, intricate pattern across the entire surface. It's a fantastic detail that you might not even notice at first glance. The color scheme is pure PADI: a deep, rich blue for the dial and ceramic bezel insert, punctuated with crisp pops of red. You’ll find those red accents on the tip of the seconds hand and at the 6 o'clock position on the dial. Seiko’s LumiBrite is, as always, exceptional. The large, applied indices and bold hands are generously filled with the stuff, ensuring legibility in the darkest conditions. The day/date window, complete with a magnifier, is a practical touch that solidifies this as a daily-wear candidate.

Built on a Classic Seiko Platform: The Turtle Case

The watch uses the beloved cushion-style case nicknamed the "Turtle" by fans. With a diameter of 45.0mm, it sounds large on paper. But here’s the part most people miss: the lug-to-lug measurement is a very wearable 47.7mm. This compact north-to-south dimension allows the case to hug the wrist, making it comfortable for a surprisingly wide range of people. The 13.2mm thickness is standard for a 200-meter automatic diver and slips under a cuff better than you'd expect. The biggest upgrade for a Turtle at this price point is the bezel insert. It’s made of a vivid blue ceramic, which provides superior scratch resistance compared to the aluminum inserts typically found on standard models. This is a genuinely premium feature.

The 47.7mm lug-to-lug length is the key dimension. It’s why a 45mm Seiko "Turtle" often wears more comfortably than many 42mm watches with longer, flatter lugs.

The Workhorse Within: Caliber 4R36

Seiko PADI Automatic Diver's 200m watch. Blue dial, blue bezel, stainless steel case & bracelet, magnified day/date.
Powering the HBB002 is Seiko’s own Caliber 4R36. This is a true in-house movement, and it’s the definition of a reliable workhorse. It features hacking (the second hand stops when you pull the crown), hand-winding, and a day/date complication. The power reserve is approximately 41 hours, which is the standard for this generation of movements. It’s not a high-beat chronometer, but that’s not its purpose. The 4R36 is designed for durability and ease of service, which is exactly what you want in a tool watch. It’s a movement that has proven itself in millions of watches. It won’t win any accuracy competitions against movements costing thousands more, but it will keep ticking reliably for years. For a $750 diver, it's the right choice.

The Full Kit: Bracelet and a Special Seiko Silicone Strap

Seiko didn't stop at the watch head. The HBB002 comes with a solid stainless steel three-link bracelet. It features a three-fold clasp with a secure lock, push-button release, and a diver's extension—essential for fitting over a wetsuit. But the real bonus is the included silicone strap. This isn't just a generic strap; it's a model-specific one printed with "Professional Association of Diving Instructors." It also features Seiko’s classic accordion-style vents, which allow the strap to expand and contract with pressure changes and wrist movement. This two-strap package adds tremendous value. You get a robust bracelet for daily wear and a comfortable, purpose-built dive strap for the water, all in one box.

Seiko's Special Editions and Market Value

Seiko has mastered the art of the special and limited edition. From conservation-themed models like the one teased in "Seiko's Next Move: A Tiger-Striped Diver for International Tiger Day?" to partnership pieces like this PADI anniversary watch, the brand keeps its catalog fresh and exciting. The HBB002 is a limited edition of 8,000 pieces. While that number may sound high, demand for PADI-branded Seikos is consistently strong. Given the unique dial, ceramic bezel, and full strap package, it offers a lot of watch for its $750 price tag. It competes fiercely with offerings from microbrands and other established Swiss players in the sub-$1,000 dive watch space. But few can offer the combination of in-house manufacturing, genuine heritage, and the specific appeal of the PADI co-branding. This watch knows exactly who its audience is.
Editor's Take

For $750, the Seiko Prospex HBB002 is an absolute knockout. It combines the iconic and comfortable Turtle case with premium upgrades like a ceramic bezel and a deeply detailed dial. It’s a perfect pickup for a dedicated Seiko fan or anyone wanting a special diver with a real story behind it.

The combination of thoughtful design, robust specifications, and a rich backstory makes the HBB002 a fitting tribute. It celebrates not just an anniversary, but a shared commitment to the underwater world. For collectors who value that connection, this piece is hard to ignore.
