Your favorite tool watch has a dirty secret. After a long day, a workout, or a swim, the strap holding it to your wrist starts to smell. That faint, funky odor is the result of bacteria thriving in trapped sweat, and it's a problem that has plagued fabric straps forever.
There's another, more hidden issue. Recent studies have found that many modern synthetic straps, especially those on smartwatches, are leaching PFAS "forever chemicals." Now, a Kickstarter campaign from Graphene-X is tackling both problems head-on, rebuilding the classic military strap from the fiber up.
The G10 strap, first specified by the British Ministry of Defence in 1973, is a masterpiece of functional design. Its single-pass construction means that even if one spring bar fails, your watch stays on your wrist. The design, later nicknamed the NATO, is perfect; the material, however, is not.
Graphene-X started by reinventing the yarn itself. They’re using graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice. It's a material famous for being around 200 times stronger than steel by weight.

Here’s the part that really matters. The graphene isn't a coating. Graphene oxide is blended into the nylon polymer at 1% by weight *before* being melt-spun into fiber. The performance is baked into the material's DNA.
This is a fundamental difference from straps with antimicrobial treatments. Silver or copper coatings work by leaching ions, and every wash or sweaty workout wears them away. The LATTICE strap’s properties are permanent.
Third-party testing showed the graphene fiber inhibited 99% of common bacteria and fungi, even after 50 wash cycles. That’s the difference between a temporary treatment and a true composite material.
The hardware gets an upgrade, too. Forget cheap, plated buckles. All the hardware on the LATTICE straps is Grade 2 titanium. It's hypoallergenic, completely corrosion-proof, and about 40% lighter than stainless steel.
The flagship model is the Lattice NATO 20 Titanium. It's the classic 1973 G10 design, now executed in a 21st-century material. It fits any watch with 20mm lugs and comes in one color: Graphene Grey, because the carbon provides the color.

The woven construction also allows air and water to pass through freely. Unlike a solid rubber or fluoroelastomer strap that traps sweat, the LATTICE breathes. A quick rinse in the sink is all it needs to reset.
Beyond the odor, there’s a serious conversation happening around "forever chemicals." The LATTICE strap is explicitly engineered to be Zero PFAS. This is a direct response to some frankly alarming research.
A peer-reviewed 2024 study from the University of Notre Dame tested smartwatch bands for fluorine, the chemical marker for PFAS. They found it in 68% of the bands. The worst offenders were the expensive fluoroelastomer sport bands, some with staggeringly high levels.

The researchers' advice was blunt: avoid fluoroelastomer and opt for woven nylon. The LATTICE strap isn't just an alternative; it feels like the definitive answer to that advice.
Graphene-X isn't just focusing on traditional watches. They’ve designed two versions for the Apple Watch. The Lattice AW Buckle Titanium is a clean, single-pass design with a titanium pin buckle and 11 adjustment holes for a perfect fit.
A stretch goal, unlocked at $40,000, introduces the Lattice AW Fidlock. This version uses a slick magnetic Fidlock closure for one-handed operation and micro-adjustments. It’s a very clever piece of hardware for a high-tech material.
To bring this project to life, Graphene-X partnered with Braloba. This isn't just any factory; it's a Swiss family company founded in Biel in 1976. For nearly 50 years, they’ve been making straps for major watch brands, which adds a huge layer of trust and manufacturing credibility.

The Kickstarter campaign ends on September 1. Production is slated to take about three months, with the first straps shipping to backers in December 2026. They are shipping worldwide, and importantly, all EU orders will be shipped DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) to avoid surprise customs fees.
As with any crowdfunded project, there are risks, but the team is transparent about them. They’ve built buffer time into their schedule for potential supply chain issues and are leaning on their experienced partners to handle the complexities of manufacturing.
Graphene-X isn't just selling a strap; they're selling a material science solution to real-world problems. For anyone who actually uses their tool watch as intended, the promise of a durable, odor-free, and PFAS-free strap isn't just an upgrade—it's the new standard.

This project feels like an overdue evolution. It keeps the flawless geometry of the original MoD strap but rebuilds it in a material that solves the very issues that make us toss old fabric straps in a drawer. This is the kind of thoughtful, material-first innovation we love to see.
