Just 100 pieces. A price tag of €1,595. And a whole lot of mechanical architecture on full display. That’s the core proposition of the new Depancel Série-R Chronograph Skeleton, a watch that brings an impressive mechanical spec sheet to the brand's signature automotive design.
This isn't just another microbrand chronograph. Depancel is putting a complex, openworked movement front and center, betting that enthusiasts care as much about the engineering as they do the design. It's an ambitious move, especially in such a limited run.

Depancel has always leaned heavily into its automotive roots. The brand's name itself is a portmanteau referencing French roadside assistance. To understand the Série-R Chronograph Skeleton, you have to look at two very different eras of automotive history.
The foundational design—that bold, rectangular 40x36mm case—is an established Depancel silhouette originally inspired by the commanding radiator grille of the 1930s Delage D8. It’s a touch of pre-war French luxury that gives the Série-R its distinctive footprint, as seen in earlier foundational releases like the Série-R Full Black.
But for this new skeletonized iteration, Depancel has shifted gears into the 1970s. By placing the 1971 Maserati Boomerang concept car at the center of this release's visual marketing, the brand perfectly captures the watch's transformed aesthetic. The Boomerang is famous for its sharp, retro-futuristic "wedge" geometry and a wildly unconventional steering wheel that completely exposes the dashboard instruments.
The Série-R Chronograph Skeleton does the exact same thing: it retains its classic Delage-inspired frame, but the "engine" inside has been radically exposed. The result is an aggressive, instrument-heavy mechanical vibe that feels right at home next to a 70s supercar concept. It’s the horological equivalent of putting a glass hood on a performance engine.

The case is where you first notice the Série-R's unique character. It measures 40mm x 36mm, a rectangular footprint that stands out in a sea of round watches. The lug-to-lug distance is a very wearable 48.5mm, which should help it sit comfortably on a wide range of wrists.
Its 316L steel construction plays with light, alternating between brushed flat surfaces and sharp, polished bevels. At 13.7mm thick, it isn't ultra-thin, but that height is part of the design. A significant portion of that thickness comes from a prominent, bevel-cut sapphire crystal that echoes the case's angular geometry.

With a skeleton watch, legibility can be a major issue. Depancel tackles this by creating a clear visual hierarchy. All chronograph functions—the 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock, 12-hour counter at 9, and the central seconds hand—are tipped in a vibrant orange.
The running seconds sit in a subdial at 6 o'clock. The main time-telling hands are Depancel's "Dashboard" style, also skeletonized to avoid obscuring the view. Crucially, these hands and the indices are coated in white Super-LumiNova C1 for low-light visibility.
The openworked structure here isn't just for show. It's designed to be a functional part of the dial, using bridges and plates to frame the subdials and create a sense of mechanical depth.

Here’s where it gets interesting. The movement is a Peacock SL-4802 automatic chronograph. This isn't your standard off-the-shelf caliber. It runs at a modern 4 Hz (28,800 vph) and offers a healthy 55-hour power reserve, a noticeable step up from the 40-42 hours common at this price.
But the real headline is its architecture. The SL-4802 uses a column-wheel and vertical-clutch system. This is the "better" way to build a chronograph, typically found in much more expensive watches. It ensures a smoother pusher feel and eliminates the jumpy start of the seconds hand common in cam-actuated chronos.

For any dialhead, seeing the blue column wheel actuate through the skeletonized dial is the real mechanical treat. Depancel also states each movement is checked and regulated by their watchmakers in Besançon, France, adding a layer of quality control before it ships.
The watch ships on a bull leather strap with a 22mm lug width, giving you plenty of aftermarket options. Water resistance is rated at 50 meters. This is perfectly fine for daily life—rain, splashes, washing your hands—but don't plan on taking it for a swim.
The combination of a rectangular case and a mechanically complex aesthetic won't be for everyone. It's a statement piece that blends vintage automotive cues with modern, aggressive skeletonization. It’s a far cry from a traditional sports chronograph, but that’s entirely the point.
While it shares a genre with pieces like The Breitling Top Time B01 Racing: A 38mm Cushion Case with a Heavyweight Heart, it operates in a much more accessible price bracket. It offers a taste of that automotive-chrono world without the manufacture-caliber price tag.
For €1,595, a 100-piece limited edition with a column-wheel, vertical-clutch skeleton chronograph movement is a massive value proposition. This is for the enthusiast who values interesting mechanics and bold design over brand heritage. It’s not subtle, but it delivers an impressive amount of watch for the money.
