This isn't your typical "panda" chronograph. Usually, that term just means a white dial with black subdials. But
Seiko’s new Power Design Project releases, born from a 2024 concept, take the idea to its logical, charming, and slightly wild conclusion: a watch designed to look like a panda’s face.

The story starts with Seiko designer Kiyotaka Sakai, whose prototype for the internal Power Design Project gained so much traction it was greenlit for production. The result is two limited-edition
quartz chronographs that lean heavily into character. They aren't trying to be
subtle tool watches; they’re all about personality.

From Concept to Collector's Piece
Seiko's Power Design Project is where the brand’s designers get to experiment, often with concepts that never see the light of day. When one does make it out, you know it's something special. Here, the subdials are the panda's eyes, the pushers are its ears, and the entire case architecture comes together to form its head.
It’s a playful and literal interpretation that stands apart from Seiko’s more serious
Prospex Speedtimer line. Those are sport watches that happen to use a panda color scheme. This *is* the panda.
The dial itself has a texture meant to evoke fur. And in a brilliant touch of Japanese wordplay, the tachymeter is rebranded as a "SASAMETER." *Sasa* is a term for bamboo, and the scale tops out at 30 km/h, a nod to a panda's running speed.
The Seiko Case: A Lesson in Wearability
Let's talk dimensions, because the numbers tell a surprising story. The stainless steel case is 43mm in diameter and 14.6mm thick. On paper, that sounds substantial, maybe even bulky.
But here’s the number that matters most: the lug-to-lug length is just 44.1mm. This is incredibly compact for a 43mm watch. It means the watch should wear much smaller than its diameter suggests, sitting neatly on the wrist without massive overhang.
This is a clever bit of design. The wide case provides a big canvas for the panda face, but the short lugs keep it accessible for a wider range of wrist sizes. The lug width is a standard 20mm, which is great news for anyone who loves swapping straps.
That 44.1mm lug-to-lug on a 43mm case is the magic spec. It’s what makes this oversized concept wearable in the real world.
Inside: The Seiko 8T61 Quartz Heart
Powering these conceptual pieces is Seiko’s Calibre 8T61, a reliable quartz chronograph movement. No, it’s not a mechanical marvel, but that’s not the point of this watch. The 8T61 delivers practicality and keeps the price from spiraling into four-figure territory.
You get an accuracy of +/-15 seconds per month, which is leagues better than any mechanical counterpart. The SR936SW battery provides a solid three-year life, so you can just set it and forget it.
The chronograph measures up to 60 minutes in crisp 1/5th-of-a-second increments. The display is clean, with hour, minute, and seconds hands, plus a 24-hour indicator. Seiko's excellent LumiBrite is applied to the hands and markers for low-light legibility.

Seiko Conceptual Chronograph HHK001P: The Classic Panda
The HHK001P is the more literal of the two, sticking to the classic black-and-white colorway we associate with pandas. Its clean white dial and deep black subdials create a high-contrast look that’s immediately recognizable. This is the version for the purist who loves the concept and the classic look.
The watch is fitted with a white leather strap that completes the monochrome aesthetic. The crystal is Seiko's proprietary Hardlex glass, a hardened mineral crystal that offers excellent shatter resistance. Water resistance is listed at 30 meters, which is fine for daily splashes but not for swimming.
Limited to 3,000 pieces worldwide, it's accessible but still offers a degree of exclusivity. It's not individually numbered, so collectability will stem from its unique design story and limited production run. Any serious dialhead will recognize this as a fun, off-the-beaten-path Seiko.

Seiko Conceptual Chronograph HHK002P: The Newborn Panda
If the HHK001P is the classic, the HHK002P is the playful variant. Its soft pink dial is apparently inspired by the color of a newborn panda. It’s a bold choice that pushes the design further into the realm of fashion and pure, unadulterated fun.
The core specs are identical to its monochrome sibling: the same 43mm case, the same compact 44.1mm lug-to-lug, and the same reliable 8T61 quartz movement. The black subdials pop against the pink background, maintaining the "panda face" legibility.
This version is the rarer of the two, with a production run of just 2,000 pieces. It’s paired with a matching pink leather strap. For the collector who wants the most distinctive and scarce model from this unique project, the HHK002P is the one to chase.

Editor's TakeThis is pure, unpretentious fun from Seiko, and it's fantastic. It’s not a watch for spec-sheet warriors, but a genuinely creative piece for collectors who value design narrative. The accessible price and wearable dimensions make it a guilt-free pickup for anyone wanting to add some personality to their watch box.

A Watch With Character
The Seiko Power Design Project "Panda" chronographs are a refreshing reminder that watches don't always have to be about heritage, depth ratings, and mechanical complexity. Sometimes, they can just be about joy. By turning a conceptual sketch into a production reality, Seiko has delivered a watch with a story and a smile.
Both the HHK001P and HHK002P are limited editions scheduled for dispatch in November/December 2026. Given the unique design and the buzz around the original concept, these likely won't stick around for long. This is your chance to own a piece of Seiko's creative lab.
