For $899, you can now pre-order a Swiss-Made watch with a hand-wound movement from Austin's Trafford Watch Co. That sentence alone should make you sit up and pay attention. The new Crossroads Core collection isn't just about hitting a price point with a Swiss label; it's about packaging a thoughtful, design-forward watch in a way that feels both familiar and entirely fresh.

Available in a vibrant sunburst Blue or a rich Red, the Crossroads Core is the permanently available version of the brand’s celebrated, often sold-out, Crossroads design. It keeps the stunning sculptural dial and unique case shape but refines the formula with a dramatically thinner profile and a Swiss engine. This is a big move for Trafford, and it’s one they seem to have nailed.

Trafford’s Swiss Heart and American Soul

The big news here is the "Swiss-Made designation" on the dial. The Crossroads Core is powered by a Sellita SW-210 hand-wound movement, built in La Chaux-de-Fonds with assembly in Porrentruy. This isn’t just about bragging rights; it signals a new chapter for the brand. While models like the excellent Trafford Daytripper cleverly utilized a robust Japanese movement, the shift to Swiss here is deliberate. The choice of a hand-wound caliber is key. It allows the case to be impressively thin and connects the owner to the watch through the daily ritual of winding. This is a watch that asks for a moment of your time each day. That tangible connection is something many collectors, new and old, actively seek out. It’s a quiet moment before the day begins, a mechanical heartbeat you bring to life yourself.

A Tale of Two Sizes

Trafford made a smart decision with sizing. Instead of just offering one size, the Crossroads Core comes in two versions, named for how they wear, not their exact measurements. This is a crucial distinction for a square watch. The Crossroads 40 has a case measuring 35x36mm, which Trafford says wears like a conventional 40mm round watch. The smaller Crossroads 36 measures 31x32mm and offers the presence of a 36mm round piece. Both models share the same impressively slim 9mm thickness. This approach acknowledges that a square watch occupies more visual real estate on the wrist. By providing a "wears like" equivalent, Trafford makes it much easier to choose the right fit without having to guess. Best of all, both Blue and Red dials are available in either size.

Deconstructing the Trafford Crossroads Case

Cushion-cased steel watch with glowing green bezel, dark teal dial, luminous numerals, red seconds hand, brown suede strap on a black surface.
The case of the Crossroads Core is where the design really sings. At just 9mm thick at its tallest point, it’s remarkably slender for any watch, let alone a square one with a complex crystal. This thinness is a direct benefit of using the manual-wind Sellita movement. The signature "curved horizon line" profile remains, but it sits closer to the wrist for a more integrated feel. Another key feature is the protective hardening coating applied to the 316L stainless steel case. This gives it a significant boost in scratch resistance, making it a watch you can wear daily without babying it. For the Crossroads 40, the lug-to-lug distance is a very wearable 46mm. Combined with the 9mm height, this should make for a comfortable and balanced experience on a wide range of wrists. It’s a thoughtfully proportioned case that lets the dial do the talking.

At 9mm thick, the Crossroads Core is thinner than many common round dress watches. Achieving this in a square case with a double-domed sapphire crystal is a real technical feat at this price.

The Dial is the Star

Let's be honest, the dial is the main event here. Trafford has created something with incredible depth and light play. The central area is raised, sloping down toward the rehaut in a graceful curve. This topography is accentuated by a gorgeous sunburst finish that sends radiating waves of light across the surface. The numerals are polished, filled with C3 Super-LumiNova, and physically inset into that slope. This small detail adds a huge amount of visual depth. The level of detail here is what will make any true dialhead look twice. It’s a dynamic and architectural dial that punches well above its weight. To cap it off, a new lumed chapter ring has been added, which creates a spectacular light show after dark.

That Double-Domed Crystal

A double-domed sapphire crystal is hard to execute on a square case. The geometry is far more complex than on a simple round watch. Yet, Trafford has made it a defining element of the Crossroads design. The dramatic arc of the crystal complements the case’s horizon line. A subtle bevel at the edge catches color from the dial, creating a soft frame of light. It’s a beautiful effect that showcases the brand’s attention to detail. The underside of the crystal is hollowed out, bringing the glass closer to the dial for better legibility while keeping the overall profile thin. It’s protected by an anti-reflective coating on the interior to cut down on glare.

A New Bracelet Completes the Package

Trafford is also introducing a new H-link bracelet as an optional add-on for $249. Like the case, it’s made from hardened 316L stainless steel for scratch resistance. The design cleverly mirrors the square case, with small rectangular gaps between the links. Functionally, it’s packed with features collectors want. It has quick-release end-links for easy strap changes. The clasp is a flat butterfly style, and most importantly, it includes an on-the-fly micro-adjust system for finding the perfect fit without tools. This isn’t just an afterthought bracelet. It’s a well-engineered option that completes the watch, turning it into a versatile piece that can easily dress up or down.
Editor's Take

For $899, the Trafford Crossroads Core is an almost unbelievable value. You get a unique American design, a Swiss hand-wound movement, and fantastic specs in a package that stands out from the crowd. This is for the enthusiast who values individual design and the tactile pleasure of a mechanical watch.

Trafford's Crossroads Core: Should You Pre-Order?

The Trafford Crossroads Core is a compelling proposition. It offers a distinct identity in a market saturated with homage designs and cookie-cutter cases. The move to a Swiss manual-wind movement is a significant step up, offering a more refined and interactive ownership experience. The combination of a slim, hardened case, a beautifully complex dial, and practical features like 100m of water resistance makes this a fantastic all-arounder. It’s a watch that starts conversations without shouting for attention. With an estimated shipping date of December 2026, the pre-order requires some patience. But for a watch that offers this much design, character, and Swiss mechanical substance for under $1,000, it looks to be well worth the wait.
