Trafford’s entire philosophy feels grounded in real-world use, and the Touring GMT is a perfect example. It combines a fan-favorite movement with practical upgrades often missing at this price point. It’s a compelling package that punches well above its weight.
The Trafford Touring GMT Core
Most GMTs are built around the idea of military time or aviation. They use a standard 24-hour scale that works, but it's not always intuitive. Trafford went in a completely different direction, designing the watch around a simple, human question: is it day or night back home?
A Dial for People, Not Pilots
This is where the Touring GMT gets really interesting. Instead of a typical 24-hour bezel or chapter ring with midnight at the top, Trafford uses a two-tone AM/PM scale. The dial is visually split into daylight and nighttime halves, with midnight placed at the bottom.
This simple change makes a huge difference. A quick glance tells you whether your family is asleep or having breakfast. It’s a more emotional, visual connection to home than trying to translate 21:00 on a standard military scale.
The design itself is clean and legible. The Core model features a white, fully lumed dial, giving it a bright and modern look. This isn't just a tool; it's a design-forward piece with a specific point of view.
The Miyota 9075 "True GMT" Engine
Powering the watch is the Miyota 9075, a movement that has completely changed the game for affordable GMTs. This is a "true" GMT, often called a traveler's or flyer's GMT. It means the main hour hand can be adjusted independently in one-hour jumps, which is perfect for changing time zones.
When you land, you just jump the local hour hand forward or back without stopping the watch. The GMT hand and seconds hand keep running, so your home time and accuracy are never disturbed. This is the functionality that, until recently, was reserved for watches costing thousands more.
We've covered this caliber's importance in our deep dive, The Miyota 9075: The Most Important GMT Movement in Years. Trafford doesn't just drop the stock movement in, either. They regulate each one in-house to a respectable +/- 10 seconds per day.
The 9075 runs at 28,800 vph (4 Hz), giving the seconds hand a smooth sweep. It also packs a 42-hour power reserve, which is perfectly adequate for a daily-wear travel watch.
Built Tougher Than It Looks
The specs go far beyond the movement. The case is a very wearable 39mm in diameter, with a 46mm lug-to-lug and a 12mm thickness. These are fantastic dimensions that should fit a wide range of wrists comfortably.
The entire case is crafted from 316L stainless steel and then treated with a hardening coating. This is a huge value-add. It makes the watch significantly more resistant to the everyday scratches and scuffs that can quickly age a timepiece.
Let's be clear: scratch-resistant hardening on a sub-$1000 watch is not standard. Trafford applies this coating to both the case and the optional bracelet, which is a feature you usually find at a much higher price point.

Water resistance is a solid 10 ATM (100 meters), supported by a screw-down crown. This makes it more than capable of handling swimming and other adventures on the road. Sapphire crystal is used on both the front and back, with an anti-reflective coating on the interior of the main crystal to reduce glare.
A Seriously Lumed-Up Dial
Low-light visibility is clearly a priority here. The entire white dial is luminescent, a feature that many fellow dialheads will appreciate. This provides a bright, even glow in the dark that makes reading the time effortless.
But Trafford didn't stop there. The date disc at 6 o'clock is also lumed. It’s a small detail that shows an incredible commitment to a cohesive and functional design, ensuring every critical element is legible when you need it most.
The Bracelet Option
The Touring GMT ships on a brown leather strap, but you absolutely should consider the optional bracelet for an extra $149. It's custom-made from the same hardened 316L steel as the case. It tapers from 20mm at the lugs down to a comfortable 16mm.
The bracelet also includes two killer features: quick-release end links and an on-the-fly micro-adjustment clasp. This means you can swap straps without tools and get a perfect fit throughout the day as your wrist expands or contracts. These are quality-of-life features that make a watch so much better to own.
Editor's Take
The Trafford Touring GMT Core is a standout in a crowded field. It combines a true traveler's movement with an intelligent dial design and a robust, hardened case. For anyone looking for a practical and stylish travel watch under $1,000, this is one of the most convincing options on the market today.
