OVD MØ:ARK: Concrete Moonphase Watch Unveiled

The OVD MØ:ARK challenges watchmaking norms with its innovative concrete dial, sculpted to mimic the lunar surface. This Kickstarter-exclusive project combines raw material artistry with a conceptual moonphase, creating a truly unique timepiece.

Concrete isn't the first material that comes to mind for a watch dial. It’s heavy, it’s brutal, it’s architectural. But a new project on Kickstarter, the OVD MØ:ARK, is betting that concrete can also be poetic, especially when it’s shaped to look like the moon. This isn’t just a gimmick. OVD is creating a watch where the material is the entire story. It’s a bold move that sidesteps the usual spec wars of microbrands, focusing instead on texture, artistry, and a very specific design vision.

The MØ:ARK is a Kickstarter-exclusive project, and OVD is making one thing clear from the start. This is a one-time-only production run. If you want one, this campaign is your only shot.

The MØ:ARK Concrete Moonphase

Let's get right to the heart of it: that dial. OVD calls it a "proprietary, high-performance concrete mix," which sounds more like something from a construction site than a watch factory. And that's exactly the point. The brand is deliberately playing with the contrast between raw material and refined object. The process itself is fascinating. It starts with high-precision 3D modeling to create a micro-mold that captures the detailed topography of the lunar surface. This isn’t a simple stamped pattern; it’s a genuine, three-dimensional texture.

From Liquid Stone to Lunar Surface

Liquid concrete is then hand-poured into each mold. The team has to be meticulous here to eliminate any microscopic air bubbles that could compromise the structure. After pouring, each dial is left to cure and mature under controlled conditions. The final steps involve skilled hand-polishing and a sealing process. This is what turns a brittle piece of concrete into a component resilient enough for a watch. The result is a hyper-realistic, crater-filled canvas with a glare-free matte finish.

A Conceptual Take on the Moonphase

The second defining feature is the moonphase complication itself. But OVD isn't aiming for astronomical precision here. They describe the display as a "conceptual moonphase" and an "artistic expression of the lunar journey." What does that mean in practice? It means the complication is there for aesthetic effect. The active disc rotates day by day, but its purpose is to create a fluid interpretation of light and shadow against the cratered dial, not to track the heavens perfectly.

The most interesting part is how the moonphase comes alive at night. The disc is coated with high-grade Super-LumiNova, making the moon and stars glow vividly in the dark.

This transforms the complication. Instead of a tiny, technical indicator you need a loupe to appreciate, it becomes a dynamic, luminous piece of art. It’s a clever way to make a classic complication feel fresh and completely integrated with the watch’s core theme.

Movement and Mechanics

Powering the MØ:ARK is a Miyota automatic movement. For a project like this, it’s the right call. Miyota calibers are workhorses: reliable, durable, and easily serviceable by any competent watchmaker. Choosing a Miyota movement keeps the focus on the design and material innovation. It signals that this watch is for someone who values the art of the dial over the prestige of an in-house or Swiss caliber. It's a practical choice for a crowdfunded watch aiming for an accessible price point.

Colors, Case, and Collectibility

The MØ:ARK is offered in five distinct colorways, each with a fittingly elemental name. The variations allow the concrete texture to take on different personalities, from stark gray to a surprisingly warm earth tone. The options include:
  • 01 NORDIS MEDIUM GREY
  • 02 FJORD MATT BLUE
  • 03 FERN MATT GREEN
  • 04 DUNE MATT EARTH
  • 05 ASHES LIGHT GREY
The case design, based on the images, appears clean and utilitarian, letting the dial remain the star of the show. The finishing looks to be a matte or brushed treatment that complements the concrete's texture. A simple, signed crown completes the functional aesthetic. Here’s the part that collectors will pay attention to. The MØ:ARK is a limited edition of just 299 pieces, exclusive to the Kickstarter campaign. Each caseback is individually engraved with its unique serial number, from 001/299 to 299/299. OVD states it very clearly: "One campaign. One production run. Never reproduced." This is a classic and effective strategy for ensuring rarity. Backers know they are getting a piece that won’t be diluted by future releases.
Editor's Take

The OVD MØ:ARK is for the collector who is more interested in design philosophy and material experimentation than movement snobbery. It's a wearable piece of architectural art that puts texture and concept first. If you love unconventional watches that start conversations, this is a project worth watching closely.

The MØ:ARK is an intriguing proposition. It’s a watch that leans heavily into its core concept, executing it with a surprising level of artisanal detail. By combining a concrete lunar dial with a luminous, artistic moonphase, OVD has created something that genuinely stands out in the crowded microbrand space.

For those of us who appreciate when a brand commits fully to a singular idea, the MØ:ARK is a compelling piece of design. It’s a reminder that innovation in watchmaking doesn’t always have to come from a new escapement or a record-breaking depth rating. Sometimes, it’s as simple, and as complex, as turning stone into a tiny moon.
