For $350, you can get a lot of watch these days. The microbrand scene is packed with solid specs and value propositions. But can you get real character, thoughtful design, and a proper mechanical heart for that price? Monogriis seems to think so, and its new Resta Midori R50M-001 is making a seriously compelling case.
This isn't just another spec-sheet hero. It’s a watch built around a distinct philosophy: 1950s elegance, Japanese aesthetics, and modern materials. It’s a combination that, on paper, looks like it should cost a whole lot more.
At first glance, the Resta Midori grabs you with its color. "Midori" is Japanese for green, and the brand took that inspiration seriously. This isn't a flat, one-dimensional green; it's a dynamic sunray dial designed to evoke the shifting shades of a Japanese forest.

The brand says it wanted a green with depth, and the sunray finish delivers. In low light, it’s a deep, contemplative forest green. Under direct sun, it flashes with a brighter, more vivid character. Paired with warm gold-tone hands and indices, the whole package feels cohesive and intentional.
The most crucial number here is 36mm. For years, the industry trended larger, but we're finally seeing a welcome return to more classic, wearable sizes. With a 45mm lug-to-lug, the Resta Midori’s dimensions are pure vintage dress watch.
These numbers suggest it will sit comfortably on a wide range of wrists, without the overbearing presence of a 40mm+ case. It’s a size that whispers, rather than shouts. This is a deliberate choice from Monogriis to channel the elegance of the 1950s.

But the case isn't just a simple circle. The lugs are softly sculpted, rising from the case band to create interesting plays of light and shadow. It's a subtle detail that gives the watch a much more premium look than its price suggests.
Here’s where it gets really interesting. The Resta Midori features a box-shaped sapphire crystal. This gives it that warm, dimensional profile of old acrylic crystals but with the scratch resistance we expect from a modern timepiece.
The case itself is about 10.5mm thick, but the crystal brings the total height to 13.9mm. This depth is intentional, evoking the feel of mid-century watches. It’s a profile that has real presence without relying on a huge diameter.
Flipping the watch over reveals another surprise: a screw-down exhibition case back, also with a sapphire crystal. Seeing both a box-domed sapphire front and a sapphire display back on a $350 watch is genuinely impressive.
One of the dial’s defining features is the hour hand. It’s a playful take on a Breguet-style "lollipop" hand. This small detail adds a touch of personality that prevents the design from feeling too sterile or derivative.
Powering the Resta Midori is the Japanese-made Miyota Cal. 8N40. This is an automatic movement from Citizen's powerhouse caliber division. It offers automatic winding, hand-winding, and a small-seconds display at six o'clock.

The power reserve is approximately 42 hours, and it beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3Hz). While some modern movements run at a faster 4Hz, the 3Hz frequency feels perfectly suited to the watch's vintage character. The sweep of the small seconds hand will have a slightly more traditional, deliberate cadence.
This isn't a high-horology, chronometer-certified caliber, and that's fine. It's a reliable, proven workhorse that allows Monogriis to deliver a mechanical experience, viewable through the sapphire case back, at an incredibly accessible price point.
Monogriis completes the look with a tonal green lizard-embossed leather strap. Using a matching green strap is a bold choice that doubles down on the Midori concept. It creates a unified, stylish look right out of the box.

The strap is fitted with a push-button butterfly deployant clasp, a feature that reduces wear and tear on the leather over time. It also features quick-release spring bars, making strap changes a breeze. For a watch that feels like a strap monster, this is a very welcome touch.
Compared to other affordable microbrands, like the slightly cheaper The Höglund & Sons Mark V, the Monogriis leans more into vintage dress aesthetics with its 36mm size and small seconds, whereas the Mark V offers a more contemporary everyday look at 38mm. Both offer fantastic value, but they cater to slightly different tastes.
The Monogriis Resta Midori R50M-001 is an absolute knockout for $350. It delivers a thoughtful design, great proportions, and features like dual sapphire crystals that are rare at this price. This is the perfect watch for someone who loves vintage style but wants modern reliability, all without breaking the bank.
This watch is proof that good design doesn't have to be expensive. Monogriis has successfully blended a distinct aesthetic vision with a set of specs that punch well above their weight. It's a watch with a clear point of view.
From the sculpted 36mm case to the dynamic green dial and dual sapphire crystals, every element feels considered. If you're looking for an affordable mechanical watch with genuine character, the Resta Midori is one of the most compelling options on the market today.
